Our annual Turkey Trot competition took place on Saturday 6th December 70 members taking part in reasonable weather conditions for the time of year.

Many participants turned up in their Christmas jumpers and hats to enjoy a great day in which there was mulled wine, mince pies and after match drinks courtesy of the captains and Turkey baps, chips and gravy provided by the club.

Massive congratulations to the winning team consisting of Elaine Sambell, Paul Gott, Keith Winter and Jim Wren with a fantastic score of net 58.

Second was Anne Marie Stott, Rob Court, John Verdin and Colin Christie with net 60.1 and third was Irene Ross, Colin Stott and Davie Thompson with net 61.

A good day for the Stott family and a great week for Jim Wren after being part of the winning team in the Seniors Yellow Ball competition at the start of the week. Clearly a good team player.

As is tradition, we also presented the trophies to all the winners of the majors and knockout competitions throughout the year and it was great to see so many proud and happy people being presented with their awards.

The atmosphere in the clubhouse afterwards was great to see with everyone sharing stories of their round.

Big thanks to all who contributed to making it a great day, including all the members who played, Donna, Emma and Jane for serving the food and drinks, the ground staff for maintaining the course in good order, Steve Houlston and Sue Wall for organising the draw and collating the results and Mr Treasurer, Steve Sambell for providing everyone with a “free” day.

Our final event of the season saw another great turnout from regular participants and some guests enjoying our hospitality.

Great scoring was evident again, with the added twist of a random draw for the mystery pairs, deciding our winners.

Claiming first place on 42 points were Mr Captain Davie and Jo Ridgley, 2nd place went to Janice Holland and guest Morris Legge with 39 points and 3rd place went to Sharon Tidd and Adrian Larkin with 38 points (securing their prize courtesy of countback). Also claiming prizes via the random lucky draw were Carol Legge and Ian Ridgely.

Thanks to everyone who took part over the season – we hope you enjoyed the varied competition formats and the excellent food choices provided by Donna and her team.

Another great turn out for an American Foursomes event played in recognition of American Independence Day.

Despite having to dodge some showers (our first damp conditions of the year) 32 players took to the fairways. In 3rd place, Sue & Alan Groves with 26 points, 2nd place, Gaynor MacGregor & Colin Stayner with 27 points, and taking the honours with 30 points were Sue Wall & Peter Wilson who managed a gross birdie on the 5th to double their points on that hole to 8!

Special mention also to Andrea & Susan Alexander who were the only other team managing a double points gross birdie on the 6th which secured them a fantastic 8 points on that hole.

The final supper comp is a ‘mystery pairs’ event on 25th July and is open for booking on HDID.

Another great turnout for the Supper Comp with 32 members and guests enjoying some early evening sunshine, with the threat of heavy downpours not quite materialising.

Some close scores with count back deciding 4th place, new Supper Comp players Ryan and Jamie Ball pipping Mr C and Lady VC.

3rd place was taken by Graham Wilson and Andy Stone and the winners, on another count back, was Patti Vincent and Graham Martin who beat the Tidd’s into 2nd.

Mr President will be back from his holiday to take up the reigns for the next Supper Comp on 4th July.

31 players (& 1 dog) enjoyed a Texas scramble comp over on the Championship Course of Friday 23rd May, followed by an excellent meal in the SALT restaurant.

All teams scored well, with the winning team of Jane, Richard, Lisa & Janis just pipping the runners up of Sue, Patti, Davie & Graham.

Well done to everyone & see you all at the next event on Friday 13th June on the Premier.

Great to see familiar faces and nice to welcome some new players, with 36 entrants for the first supper competition of the 2025 season.

Overall, there was some super scoring with a congested leaderboard for the runner up places (serious countback calculations utilised), but clear winners in Jo and Ian Ridgley with a magnificent 28 points.

Thanks to Donna and her team for laying on a great menu for everyone and thanks to all entrants for playing and staying for the prize presentations.

We hope to see as many of you as possible for the next event on Friday 23rd May, which is a Texas scramble over on the Championship course (open for booking now on HDID/Clubv1).

Glad to say Plan B worked! We would have all needed scuba gear if we had played on the original date of the 7th but fortunately the weather on the 14th just about held up. A good day with a good atmosphere in the club afterwards.

The result was very close with 4 teams on 62.9 (not to mention Mr Captains team on 63). However, congratulations to the winners who won by 2 clear shots.

The second social event of the year was held on Friday evening when Andrew Murray, former European Tour Professional and radio 5 live commentator, held a putting clinic and Q&A session for members. Andrew also opened Portal Premier Golf Club back in 1990.

Everyone had a great night and lots of hints were picked up! Look out for more holes in one!  Many thanks to Andrew, clubhouse staff and Captains for organising the event.

The annual Portal Quiz Night was held recently when 126  people enjoyed  chicken / vegetable curry and a great quiz. This must be a record number (obviously, the fame of quiz master past President Pat Roper is spreading far and wide) and £526 was raised for the Captains' charity (St. Luke's Hospice).
